Finding the Breastfeeding Position That Works for You
Finding the Breastfeeding Position That Works for You
There is no single “right” breastfeeding position—there are several options that can be adapted to your needs and your baby’s comfort.
The goal is to feel comfortable and help your baby achieve a good latch.
Here are some positions you can try:
Cradle Hold
The most traditional breastfeeding position. Your baby rests in the curve of your arm, facing you, with their tummy against yours. Their head is supported by your forearm.
Cross-Cradle Hold
Very similar to the cradle hold, but you support your baby’s head with the hand opposite to the breast you are using.
This position is particularly helpful for guiding newborns who are still learning to latch effectively.
Football Hold (Rugby Hold)
Your baby is positioned alongside your body, tucked under your arm, with their head facing your breast.
This position can be especially comfortable after a caesarean section, for mothers with a larger breast size, or when breastfeeding twins.
Side-Lying Position
Perfect for nighttime feeds 🌙
You lie on your side with your baby facing you. This position can allow you to rest while breastfeeding (while ensuring that your baby is safely placed back in their own sleep space afterwards).
A Gentle Reminder: Trust Yourself
Every baby, every mother and every breastfeeding journey is unique.
With a little patience and plenty of kindness towards yourself, things will gradually fall into place.
